 24 hour hotline
         Support and information are a phone call away with the 24 hour hotline: 1-800-239-7298 or 207-324-1802. FAX 207 490-2186.

 Emergency Shelter
         Safe home or temporary shelter in a confidential  location with emergency transportation, food and clothing for residents. The shelter is also wheelchair accessible.

 Counseling
         Peer counselors offer crisis counseling for victims.

 Referrals
         Information about options and community services.

 Advocacy
         Caring Unlimited offers assistance in dealing with legal, financial and medical agencies for victims.

 Support Groups
         Facilitated groups who meet to talk, encourage and support each other.

 Children's Program
         Support groups and therapeutic play for chlidren learning to cope with an abusive situation.

 Community Intervention Program
         Outreach, in-service training, court and criminal justice advocacy.

 Community Education
         Presentations and lectures to clubs, schools, civic groups and organizations.

 Volunteer Program
         Training for volunteers who provide hotline coverage, emergency transportation, working with children, support and advocacy services.

Although men are also injured in abusive relationships, domestic abuse is considered to be the greatest cause of injury to women today. The statistics differ greatly in men vs. women injuries. The woman receives the more severe injuries than the man in abusive relationships. For women, abuse exceeds the number of rapes, muggings, and auto accidents combined. In Maine alone, an estimated 60,000 women are abused annually. And the number continues to grow by nearly 10% each year. During 1995, Caring Unlimited served over 2,600 individuals.

 

Maine laws require the police to:

Stay with you as long as they think you are in danger;

Help you get medical attention;

Charge an abuser with assault if an assault has occurred;

Treat any crimes in your home as they would any other crimes.
